Do you know these computer storage symbols?

Computer storage symbols can be found inside of “My Computer” folder, in the control panel, on the desktop and other menus throughout the computer.

Floppy Symbol

Floppy Symbol is still one of the most popular computer storage symbols. Floppy drives are no longer a standard component of a computer system; however, floppy symbol can represent removable storage like USB flash drives if other icons are not available. Floppy discs are no longer used due their bulky size and low storage capacity.

Hard Drive Symbol

Hard Drive symbol is also a very popular symbol in modern computer systems. Hard drives are used to store data, files, and operating systems. Hard drive icons can be found in “My Computer” folder, control panel and device manager.  This symbol can also represent removable “external” hard drives which can be moved from one computer system to another.

Cloud Symbol

Cloud symbol is a newer computer symbol which represents remote storage located off-site. Cloud symbol represents the internet where the information is stored and is accessed on-demand. Cloud computing is becoming increasingly popular due to inexpensive high speed internet availability and low storage costs.

Do you know these computer symbols?

Today's blog is about symbols that you can find on your computer. These symbols can be found on keyboards, mice, printers, web cams, headsets, hard drives and almost all computer peripherals.

USB
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a common symbol that identifies the connection type for a device. USB devices are usually very quick and easy to install. Modern computers have 2 to 10 usb ports to support various peripherals. Number of usb ports can be easily expanded by purchasing a USB hub. USB hub’s take up 1 usb port on the computer and open up 4 to 7 additional usb ports.
Current USB devices are high-speed 2.0 compliant.
Firewire
Firewire (IEEE 1394) was developed by Apple for high speed data transfers. It is an alternative to USB data standard. Most current computers have firewire connectors in the front and it the back. Firewire is used to connect a limited number of camcorders, hard drives and specialized peripherals. Firewire compatible peripherals are not as common as USB compatible peripherals.

Do you know this wireless symbol?

We are surrounded by various computer symbols in our daily lives. If you look around, you can spot some on your computer, router and almost anything related to computers. I will be describing some of the most common symbols in this blog.

Wi-fi Symbol

This symbol symbolizes any wireless device compliant with 802.11a/b/g/n standard. You can see this symbol on computers, printers, smart phones, routers and networking equipment. You can find this symbol in coffee shops that offer wifi internet access to it's customers. To access wi-fi in a coffee shop, you have to click on the wireless connections manager in the bottom right corner of the task bar and select the local network. Most public wifi's are free; however, most private networks are secured and cannot be accessed without a key.

WiMAX Symbol

WiMAX symbol is new to the wireless world. It is part of the fourth generation cellular wireless standard (4G). This symbol will be common in 2011 when Sprint and Clearwire add more devices and network infrastructure. 4G is the replacement for the current 3G data and cellular standard used by all cellular companies. 4G networks are much faster than current 3G networks and can transfer more data.

Lte Symbol

LTE is also a newcomer to the wireless world. It is also part of the fourth generation cellular wireless standard (4G). This symbol will be common in 2011 when Verizon and AT&T will launch their commercial 4G networks and add more devices. LTE networks are also much more efficient than current 3G networks.
